Despite the name, conformity is definitely not required. The title for the group derives from a story by Charles W. Chestnutt about a fictitious book club. Procrustes means "he who stretches" so hopefully we'll all stretch our minds a bit. Our bookclub is open to nonfiction as well as fiction, literature as well as trashy novel -- anything can be proposed as long as its discussable and can inspire a lengthy conversation. Hoping to attract dedicated discussants since regular members are key to the group developing its own vibe. We each recommend texts to discuss. We then pool a few recommendations and vote on the next few books. Currently we meet every three weeks.
History, art, philosophy, politics, literature -- all viable topics for discussion here. Salons of old typically had a patron who provided the space for savants of the day to mix and mingle. Today its almost unheard of -- so the internet must be our patron, I suppose.
Some of our previous reads include:
Baxter's Procrustes by Charles W. Chestnutt
The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan
The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer

Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. Read more
