At Home in the universe by Stuart Kauffman (note the author will be speaking at CFI this month)

A major scientific revolution has begun, a new paradigm that rivals Darwin's theory in importance. At its heart is the discovery of the order that lies deep within the most complex of systems, from the origin of life, to the workings of giant corporations, to the rise and fall of great civilizations. And more than anyone else, this revolution is the work of one man, Stuart Kauffman, a MacArthur Fellow and visionary pioneer of the new science of complexity.

Food and beverages provided. Suggested donation $4 (students $2). FREE for Friends of the Centre

    •  I liked having questions to focus the discussion; also Justin's precis was useful. However, discussion of some areas might have gone on too long. I felt that more effort should have been made to ensure everyone had an opportunity to voice their thoughts. Perhaps it would have helped to have everyone introduce themselves at the beginning and indicate their particular interests in the author/book.
    •  A tough topic to discuss in two hours. Prigogine's "Order Out of Chaos" or Schroeder's "The Hidden Face of God" would be good companion books for following up on this topic. It is a fact that just as we cannot know what lies outside the event horizon, so we cannot use scientific investigation to settle questions on the origin of life. But this we do know-the universe is "friendly" to carbon based life as we know it. The most remarkable things about life, in my opinion are that it can produce sentinent beings and that it can, tempororily at least, defy the Second Law of Thermodynamics, the last bastion of scientific certainty.
