“ We are the large group with books. ”
The Book
At previous meetings we've had a umber of requests for a graphic novel, so here it is folks (hopefully the first of many)--
Maus by Art Spiegelman
For those of you who don't know it, Maus: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History is one of the classic works written about the Holocaust. It may be better to let the reviews speak for me:
?An epic story told in tiny pictures.?
?The New York Times
?A loving documentary and brutal fable, a mix of compassion and stoicism [that] sums up the experience of the Holocaust with as much power and as little pretension as any other work I can think of.?
?The New Republic
?A quiet triumph, moving and simple?impossible to describe accurately, and impossible to achieve in any medium but comics.?
?The Washington Post
If you've not read a graphic novel, this will be a wonderful introduction. If you've read one, this is a classic. If you've read this graphic novel, please read it again and share how the book's meaning has changed for you.
The Place--City Beverage
We are meeting a little early in the month of May to avoid Memorial Day and have chosen a location on a new side of Durham with OUTDOOR seating. The weather should be lovely at the end of May--perfect for a cool beer outdoors with good conversation and a powerful book.
