Donna, who was reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk said it was fantastic. Snow, unfortunately, is not a mystery. However, another Orhan Pamuk novel, My Name is Red, is an acclaimed mystery/thriller set in Istanbul. In a review of My Name is Red, Library Journal summarizes the book beautifully:
Enishte Effendi is commissioned to illustrate a book
celebrating the sultan. Soon he lies dead at the
bottom of a well, and how he got there is the crux
of this novel. A number of narrators give testimony
to what they know about the circumstances
surrounding the murder. The stories accumulate
and become more detailed as the novel progresses,
giving the reader not only a nontraditional murder
mystery but insight into the mores and customs of
the time.
I couldn't put it better myself. Pamuk, a former art student turned writer, won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature and is a very distinct voice for a part of the world that Westerners do not often get the chance to read about (outside of a newspaper). This book should be a treat.
