So, I just learned about this event today (Sunday, March 30), but if anyone wants to meet in Santa Monica on short notice tomorrow, we can listen to the talk and then have some coffee across the street at It's A Grind or a drink in the 3rd Street Promenade, if people are interested.

I just finished the book, and while I'll post a more in-depth review later, here's a brief outline for now: Nim's Island is the story of a young girl who is left all alone on a remote tropical island. For miles in every direction, she is surrounded only by the violent ocean and the sorrow of loneliness. To survive, she is armed only with a seashell whistle, a pocketknife, a spyglass, a laptop computer with internet access, a working telephone, and a solar panel array to charge the batteries!

Oh, did I not mention - this is not a rescue story! - (at least not a geographical one). Nimâ??s father is close by the whole time, and her friends (a sea turtle, an iguana, and a sea lion) are excellent social companions for her while she awaits more contact from an internet pen pal! Wendy Orr throws in some geology and biology lessons for the reader, too. How do all these factors come together? Well, youâ??ll have to read it and/or wait for the movie in a week!

Here's a video trailer for the movie: http://videodetective.com/t... and here's where you can buy the e-book from Random House if you think you can read it in time! http://www.randomhouse.com/...

I'll try to leave work at 6:30 so I can make it there by 7:00. But, I might arriving at 7:30.

Who attended?

    •  The Q&A was a little watered down, of course, to cater to all age levels of the library-visiting population. Still, the lecture was a great opportunity to ask questions about the screen adaptation of the book to both the author and producer at the same time! Both Paula Mazur and Wendy Orr were friendly to individuals who introduced themselves, and freely answered specific questions asked person-to-person at the time of book signing.
