About Greensboro Classic British Lit Book Club

Welcome to the Greensboro Classic British Lit Book Club

Welcome gentle friend!

The Greensboro Classic British Lit Book Club was established in January, 2008, for the enjoyment of literary aficionados in the North Carolina Triad and surrounding areas. Our members comprise a group of individuals with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. Come meet people with a variety of interests. Unsurprisingly, people attracted to our group often find like-minded souls with other interests which overlap.

You are cordially invited to participate in our monthly reading discussions. Feel free to jump in and share your own thoughts. All opinions are valid and interesting. Our current reading list was chosen from a list of works authored by the esteemed Jane Austen and other literary giants of 19th century Britain. At our first meeting, selections for the next six months were chosen by members in attendance. A new reading list will be prepared approximately each six months based on membership consensus. Lists will be posted on the Message Board.

Our meetings are casual yet conducted with decorum. Although our subject matter may be perceived as esoteric, we endeavor to conduct our discussions without pretension or high-handedness. We wish to enliven and enrich our literary purpose within a cozy atmosphere over a cup of tea. Whenever practicable, we will plan a more elaborate themed tea party. Members are encouraged to wear costumes or carry accessories appropriate to the time period, and you are encouraged to bring items related to the current book selection which members will find interesting (e.g., collector memorabilia, vintage books, photographs, etc.).

Occasionally, we will plan additional events outside the scope of our reading selections. It is hoped that these events will appeal to the interests of our members. Recent past events include a Playford Ball, and performances by Lord of the Dance and Celtic Woman.

Enjoy the pleasant ambiance and feel free to peruse our Files library.

Sincerely,

Your Humble Hostesses
Kathryn and Jessica

Please read our General Rules and No Show Policy.

Visit our resource files by clicking on "Files" in the menu to the left. Jessica has prepared an overview of the 19th century which has been posted. She also prepares a summary of each author prior to our book discussions. Look in the Files section for each author biography prepared to date. We all must give a hearty "thank you" to Jessica for her time-consuming work. Her efforts are much appreciated.

On the Message Board you will find a current list of films which have a literary theme. Some films are adaptations of our book selections, and some have related literary themes.

A Master Book List of 19th century authors is found on both the Message Board and the Files section. This is the list from which we choose our monthly reading selections. A short list of current selections will be found on the Message Board and will be updated regularly.

New members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the group by perusing the Message Board and Mailing List Archive. In particular, it would be beneficial for each new member to read the "Recap of First Meeting" on the Message Board.
