This is our October/ November book club meeting. The book choice is pretty long, so I wanted to give everyone a chance to read it. I am always asked if people can come if they have not finished the book. You definitely may come if you haven't finished the book. Please come with new book choice ideas for the upcoming months. We have a new venue, thank you Michelle. I really appreciate all the help finding great venues. This is always an issue. If you have some ideas for other activities besides our book club that you would like to help host for our group, please let me know.

Thank,
Kim

The book this month is Personal History by Katharine Graham

This meeting is a little different than the past meetings. We are meeting on the steps of the library at Grand Army Plaza and going for a walk and having a picnic in Prospect Park. Please bring a towel or blanket to sit on and a lunch if you will be hungry. If you want to bring things to share with everyone that is great too. If you have any ideas for this meeting please email me.

Strollers and babies are welcome to join us.

There Is an Urgency by Gregrhi Love (author will be joining us) is brand new, and not yet on shelves, but you can order it on Amazon or Barnes and Nobles. http://www.amazon.com/There-Urgency-Gregrhi-Arawn-Love/dp/0982307403

Born into a world of horror, madness and chaos in 1973 to Debbie, a 23-year-old drug addicted prostitute and Howard, a 24-year-old addict and convict, Gregrhi Love grew up quickly with the Department of Children's Services becoming an active part of his life in 1974. With Howard in prison, the only father he knew as a child was Bobby, his mother's pimp, drug dealer, and lover. In 1980, he was placed in his first foster home. While foster care was often horrifying, nothing compared to the daily near-death experiences he survived living in Father Panik Village with Bobby and Debbie. On May 23, 1980 his coerced testimony sent Debbie to prison.
Now a grown man, Mr. Love uses his childhood traumas to change lives. Working as a teacher allows him to use the experiences of his life to help children who live in a similar world. His experiences give him a perspective most people do not have and knowledge that cannot be obtained from any textbook. There Is An Urgency explores these experiences in an effort to make others aware that people like him walk among us every day.

There Is An Urgency is inimitable in that it juxtaposes Mr. Love's experiences as an adult, working with children in school and juvenile detention settings, with personal accounts of physical and sexual abuse from his childhood. There Is An Urgency to share this story of hard won hope and resilience after years of terrifying abuse by a real life monster.

Our book is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. We couldn't get the author to come to this meeting, but instead we are trying to get a guest speaker to come talk to us about local organic cooking or local farming/ cooking (thanks Kathleen). We are still working on that. The date is subject to change because we are still working on getting the room at Rebar and a guest to come and speak. Please check back and make sure that the date hasn't changed.
