July 26's discussion is Samuel Delany's Dhalgren. Considered to be one of the science fiction masterpieces of the 20th century (and some argue in any genre), it is set in a fictional Midwestern town, cut off from the rest of the world by an unnamed catastrophe. Wikipedia describes it further: 'The story's protagonist is a nameless drifter who wears only one sandal, shoe, or boot (a signature characteristic of Delany characters). He may be seen as being intermittently schizophrenic: Not only does the novel end in schizoid babble (which recurs at various points in the text), he has memories of a stay in a mental hospital, and his perception of the "changes in reality" sometimes differs from that of the other characters. He also suffers from significant memory loss. But he may also be seen as suffering from epilepsy, because he confuses left and right (he takes wrong turns on street corners and gets lost in the city), a symptom often found in epileptics, and he has seizures.'

Directions: Bergen stop of the F train--approx. 8 blocks to the waterfront (http://www.freebirdbo.... Because of construction on Columbia Street, the B61 bus is not currently stopping in front of the store. But will as of this summer.

Book discussions take place at the store (on the Brooklyn waterfront of Cobble Hill/Red Hook) at 7:30 pm.

Monthly meetings will revolve around a particular post-apocalyptic theme (nuclear annihilation, ecological catastrophe, pestilence, alien invasion...you get the idea).

    •  I don't know how to express my elation. The location is ideal — a secluded deck behind a charming little hole-in-the-wall gem of a bookstore. The organizer and bookstore owner is the coolest, sweetest guy. The book discussion was fun and intelligent. Then we watched a short film paralleling the genre of the book. You may think I’ve fantasized this whole thing when I add the following detail: During the movie, the organizer passed out fresh cupcakes. Yes, I know. I’m challenged to find the words. Most impressive element: Each of the participants was not only a lovely person but amusing, insightful, fascinating ... let's face it. I'm still high. Don't come for the free cupcakes. (I'm sure they are an intermittent perk.) But hey. Oh — and the book great.
    •  This was a very compatible group. There were clearly many shared interests and perspectives. My only concern was that the discussion of the book could have gone on longer. But, the quality of insights on the text in the group was generally very high.
