Our next book: 50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God By: Guy P. Harrison http://www.amazon.co m/Reasons-People-Giv e-Believing-God/dp/1 591025672/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&s=books &qid=1257090347& sr=8-1 It's $12 on Amazon and is an easy read and fairly short book. And of course if you don't make it all the way through the book or haven't even read it you are still encouraged to join us for some great conversation. This time I promise we'll have the upper room to ourselves so it will be quieter and we can hear each other better! And for clarification - there is a city parking garage in the street behind (Aragon Ave) the restaurant. Hope to see you there!

The premise of this book intrigued me so I thought I'd attend this free event. Any one else interested is more than welcome to join me. Bright Sided:How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America By: Barbara Ehrenreich (Henry Holt & Company, $23) Americans are a “positive” people—cheerful, optimistic, and upbeat: this is our reputation as well as our self-image. But more than a temperament, being positive, we are told, is the key to success and prosperity. In this utterly original take on the American frame of mind, Barbara Ehrenreich traces the strange career of our sunny outlook from its origins as a marginal nineteenth-century healing technique to its enshrinement as a dominant, almost mandatory, cultural attitude. Evangelical mega-churches preach the good news that you only have to want something to get it, because God wants to “prosper” you. The medical profession prescribes positive thinking for its presumed health benefits. Academia has made room for new departments of “positive psychology” and the “science of happiness.” Nowhere, though, has bright-siding taken firmer root than within the business community, where, as Ehrenreich shows, the refusal even to consider negative outcomes—like mortgage defaults—contributed directly to the current economic crisis. With the mythbusting powers for which she is acclaimed, Ehrenreich exposes the downside of America’s penchant for positive thinking: On a personal level, it leads to self-blame and a morbid preoccupation with stamping out “negative” thoughts. On a national level, it’s brought us an era of irrational optimism resulting in disaster. This is Ehrenreich at her provocative best—poking holes in conventional wisdom and faux science, and ending with a call for existential clarity and courage. About the Author Barbara Ehrenreich is the author of thirteen books including The New York Times bestseller Nickel and Dimed. A frequent contributor to Harper's and The Nation, she has been a regular columnist at The New York Times and Time magazine. She lives in Virginia.

Ok, don't let the title of this meetup put you off, this one should be a lot of fun! Peter had the great idea that we should each bring in a book, either one we are reading or one we've read in the past and share it with the group. This means just a five minute blurb on what it's about, what you learned from it, what you liked, didn't like etc. With this group that means some pretty interesting book discussions. Can't wait to see you all there!

The book that was chosen for September's bookclub meetup was: Evolution of God by Robert Wright http://www.amazon.co m/Evolution-God-Robe rt-Wright/dp/0316734 918/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UT F8&s=books&q id=1249735297&sr =8-1 Don't worry if you only get to read part of it of the book, or don't get to it at all. The meetup is just about relaxing and having some interesting discussion! The more the merrier.

We will discuss the book Pagan Christianity? by Frank Viola and George Barna It can be obtained at Amazon or perhaps your local library This book is put out by a Christian publisher and has a pro-Christian slant, but it does a first-rate job of tracing back the pagan roots of the established church. It is a good read, but I want to stress you don't have to read it to show up to the meeting. We're just looking for some good conversation, so if life is too busy and you don't get to the end, or the beginning, still feel free to bring yourself. We'd love to have you!

The time is getting near, each person who is attending should have their thoughts about the book organized so you can present them for the others. This is our first meetup and our first book. Jim will do some research on format and have that also available for the members to discuss. Everyone is busy but a committee of sorts to decide about future books shoiuld be considered. We also will consider the type of book we want to recommend to the members. Our present book certainly is a detailed examination of the historical validity of the new testament with lots of references to the old testament as well. It was tempting to read the book with a bible at hand. One of our questions will be did anyone do that? Directions to Cafe Demetrio look for 300 Alhambra Circle Miami FL on Google Maps or set you navigator to that address. The cafe is not in the Gables proper. See you there. Jim
