Announcing a new Meetup for a ne{o}lit book club!
What: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao When: March 12, 2009 7:30 PM Where: Click the link below to find out! Meetup Description: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is the story of a fukú unleashed upon Oscar's family two generations prior to Oscar ever having seen his first Star Trek episode, read his first Marvel comic book. It is rooted in the despotic dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, "the Dictatingest Dictator who ever Dictated, the man who was Mobutu before Mobutu was Mobutu," against whom Oscar's family ran afoul in the 1940s. Reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's depiction of the Buendia family in One Hundred Years of Solitude, Oscar Wao traces Oscar's family history from Trujillo's 1940s Dominican Republic to the 1980s Patterson, New Jersey of Oscar's youth. So at this point you are probably asking yourself, what the hell is a Fuku? Did that just say Marvel Comic Book? and of course, is Dictatingest really a word? But probably most importantly, is this a book club meet-up I want to go to? And while I wont ruin the book by answering the first three questions The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao did win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and The National Book Critics Circle Award. These are usually indications a book is in fact "good". Plus it's a play on words on my favorite Hemmingway short story and my pal Aram has really been wanting to have the book club read this one. So show up, have a glass of wine with us and talk about what promises to be a pretty damn good book. Learn more here: http://bookclub.meetu... |
