Klein puts forth her hypothesis that in the midst of disaster, both natural and manmade, while the population is reeling, corporations step in and enact economic policies that would not have been passed had people been able to pay attention at the time. The book has generated a lot of controversy, with noted economists supporting and opposing her conclusions.
