The book for July 19 is Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis. This will be our first graphic novel. Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's The Leopard has been pushed back to August 16. I suggest something by the Austrian novelist Peter Handke for September. My Austrian friends say he is the best they have at present. "Ever the enfant terrible, Peter Handke exemplifies the complexity of writing as an Austrian in the post WW2 period, and his work has continually provoked controversy and outrage on a variety of fronts." -- Wikipedia.

May 17 4:00 PM

The book for May is The Lover by Marguerite Duras. (Note that Brookline Booksmith has a pile on their remainder table.) For June we are considering taking a detour into non-fiction with Ryszard Kapuscinski's astonishing The Emperor. The book is set in 1974, when Haile Selassie, who had been emperor of Ethiopa for more than forty years, was thrown out. Kapuscinski interviewed members of the palace staff about life as part of a world that was by then thousands of years old and had, over that time, transmorgified into something just spectacularly weird.
