Generally speaking, we focus on books that have won one of the major awards for creative fiction: The National Book Award, the Pulitzer prize for fiction, the PENN/Faulkner, or the Booker Award. Send an email to Bill Davies for a list of award winners since 1980. We began 2008 by resolving to read one book by each of the six acknowledged American "literary lions," and subsequently read "The Human Stain" by Philip Roth, "Rabbit is Rich" by John Updike, "Postcards" by Annie Proulx, "All the Pretty Horses" by Cormac McCarthy, "The March" by Edgar Doctorow, and "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. The following choices have been suggested by some members, but feel free to add to the list and you can vote for more than one by voting first, second, third, et cetra:
