Our fearless leader Karen has stepped down to pursue the invention of the perpetual-motion machine and to start practicing hard for next season's American Idol. I personally think she's going all the way singing Steve Martin's "King Tut." Who wouldn't want a condo made of stone-a? I know she'll miss us terribly and will come to meetups in the future.
I'm going to try to keep the group as similar as possible to what it was under Karen because she did a great job... which means we stay a social club that occasionally gets off topic and talks about some book. The one problem that we face is finding a place to meet. I live in The Colony which is about 25 miles from Karen's apartment. It's not just the distance, it's also the fact that a city with "The" in the name is entirely too pretentious for a fun group like ours. Come on over, put on your white robe, drink the Kool-Aid! No. We need to keep the meetings in Euless or close by. Karen suggested starting with the Euless public library so I'm going to try to follow up with someone there this week. We should have other options like restaurants if that doesn't work out. If you have any suggestions like your apartment complex clubhouse they would be appreciated. For now, let's assume we're going to find a place within two weeks and plan on having a meeting Sunday, June 1st at 2 p.m. The book will be "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. I read this for the Dallas Book Addicts Meetup group last month and it was very popular. |

Damon - so glad to see someone is willing to keep this going!! Surely, we'll be able to figure out a place to meet. I'd be happy to offer our home, but we're far west Fort Worth and I'm thinking most people wouldn't get too excited about the drive. Again - Thanks! We'll plan to be there June 1.

All hail the king! Long Live the King!
Cathy mentioned that Fuddruckers at Irving Mall has a big room and is OK with meetings. I think it's even free! (There is a Spring Creek Barbeque) in Grapevine that probably has a room and La Madaleine in Grapevine does too. I don't know if they are free or not. I vote for trying to have it at restaurants as we can all partake (or not) of the food and beverages while discussing books. Vs. the Library who frown on that sort of thing. Do you think Karen would bequeath us the infamous question cards? Also, I am not opposed to coughing up a few bucks if our meeting place of choice requires it! I'm also up for contributing to your "organizer" fee! Just say the word! |

We can have it at my house. I live in Euless right around the corner from Karen and I have plenty of room.
Thanks for taking this over Damon and for putting The Glass Castle next. You are the best!!! |

Yay!
I was going to step up if you didn't. Better you than me, you work-at-home slacker. :P (please don't boot me) --Heather |

Yippee!!
![]() I was absolutely devastated yesterday when I found out the meeting had been cancelled right before I walked out the door to head to Karen's apartment. SO glad you are taking it on, Damon. Let me know if/how I can help. Does this mean I persisted in reading, and actually finished, that awful book "Prey" for nothing? Yikes! Sharon |

For now we're going to use Natalie's house for the location. Her place is within a couple of miles of Karen's. Thanks, Natalie!
Since she's moving soon we'll need another location shortly. Samantha has volunteered her apartment complex clubhouse and will make sure it's a good option when she's able. She also lives very close to Karen. Thanks, Samantha! I have ordered the cards from Amazon. I think it might be fun if we each come up with a single question each week. Perhaps the person on your left could answer your question or something like that. The cards are a bit on the dull side and they aren't geared specifically toward the book we're reading like our own questions would be. We could use a card instead for those that don't want to come up with a question. Vicki, thanks for the offer on your place. Caren, thanks for your offer too. I'll take care of everything with Meetup and if a location charges us we'll see how it goes. Sharon, we had our meeting for Prey on Sunday. It was after Karen had stepped down but the meeting was still at her place. I'm sorry that you missed it. Heather, I'm going to need you to write a 5000-word essay on Memento and Fight Club in order to stay in the group. :) |

Heather,
I know he wants 500 words, but for Fight Club "HOLY $H!T!" should suffice! You'll know what I mean after watching it! Caren |

Heather:
Umm... look again! I believe he said he wants 5000 words, not 500! You have quite a writing assignment ahead of you, my dear! Will you ever be able to come up for air to join us for another book discussion?? Edited by Sharon on May 24, 2008 2:18 AM |
