We're a club for people drawn to existentialist-related fiction and philosophy texts, but who never read much of it as thoroughly as they wish. Or those who have it all memorized by now, but would still enjoy sharing their knowledge with a group of enthusiastic literate people.
Though inspired by works like Walter Kaufmann's anthology and William Barrett's Irrational Man, I've become enthusiastic about the idea that Existentialism is so much more than Sartre and Camus, as so many often clamor for. It's also more than Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, Heidegger and Simone. Rather, it's an idea, or set of ideas, that's been around before anyone began to write about any of the themes associated with it.
Everyone seems to have their own understanding of Existentialism, and we welcome you to bring yours, and to share your ideas as we explore the irrational, the subjective, the authentic and what makes us free and alive through exciting philosophy and literary works!
We generally meet every two weeks and the fee is just a dollar, but red wine and vegan cookies, chips and hummus are never declined! Looking forward to meeting you,
James
Thanks to everyone who made the 7/17 Hamlet meeting such a great success. It was great start, and for the next one we'll take a closer look at Acts 1 and 2. As further incentive, we'll watch the first two acts from the Richard Burton version of the play, which I have on dvd. Not a very extravagant production at all, but an accurate telling from the actors. Read more
