Our next book for the month of November is"Olive Kitteridge"by Elizabeth Strout. Our meetup for discussion/luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, December 5th, 2009.

At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance: a former student who has lost the will to live: Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life–sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition–its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.

Here are two reviews:
“Perceptive, deeply empathetic . . . Olive is the axis around which these thirteen complex, relentlessly human narratives spin themselves into Elizabeth Strout’s unforgettable novel in stories.”
–O: The Oprah Magazine

“Fiction lovers, remember this name: Olive Kitteridge. . . . You’ll never forget her. . . . [Elizabeth Strout] constructs her stories with rich irony and moments of genuine surprise and intense emotion. . . . Glorious, powerful stuff.”

    •  I had a great time. It was fun to be able to discuss the book and get others insights on the characters and storyline.
    •  Toni is an awesome facilitator, the ladies all had wonderful insights and were very generous. The book we shared about was a wonderful learning experience. I am so glad I am part of this group and look forward to many great books and meetings in 2010. A toast to all the Olives in our life and the learning they provide.
    •  was a good experience. got to meet some interesting women and discussion of book was good.
    •  Very good meeting. I like the book choices. They are usually books I would not have chosen to read on my own. I am always pleasantly surprised
    •  I loved the women, the food, and enjoyed discussing the book; although I would have enjoyed spending a little more time in the discussions. I think we were just getting to a point where everyone was feeling very comfortable and people were just starting to really open up and ask questions. Everyone was friendly. It was wonderful that all of the women had actually read the book and spent the time to think about the questions in the back. Looking forward to attending another one.
    •  I enjoyed the discussion of the book very much. I admire Toni for organizing and for leading group discussion in the lovely setting on Coronado Island. I look forward to attending again next month.
