This Month's Book is The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil.

Bill Gates refers to Ray Kurzweil as "the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence." For over three decades, Kurzweil has been one of the most respected and provocative advocates of the role of technology in our future. In his classic The Age of Spiritual Machines, he argued that computers would soon rival the full range of human intelligence at its best. Now he examines the next step in this inexorable evolutionary process: the union of human and machine, in which the knowledge and skills embedded in our brains will be combined with the vastly greater capacity, speed, and knowledge-sharing ability of our creations.

(This is a sizeably thick book this time, so if you prefer, the Wikipedia article on Technological Singularity at http://en.wikipedia.o... may be an adequate overview of the topic sufficient to prepare you for discussion.)

Who attended?

    •  I enjoyed meeting with a group of well-read members of the community. It was refreshing to be around so many people who have been trained in empirical studies.
    •  Thank you so much to Tom and all of the interesting people who shared very interesting thoughts on the possibility of the "singularity" occuring. It was great to see so many new people. I always feel inspired to do more reading and thinking about things after attending this group. I also love the tangential topics that often come up.
