"King Lear is the story of an old man who is brought to grief by the vicious selfishness of the ungrateful daughters to whom he has delegated his power, authority, and possessions?and by his own complacent blindness. In one sense, it is a story of the conflict between the generations, of the miseries of old age and retirement, of the tension between parents and children. But it is much more than this, not only because of its deep insights into the complexities of human character and motivations, but because this is the story of an anointed monarch, and the hostile acts against his person are blasphemous treason. There is a double offense and a double shock in what his daughters, their men, and their servants do to Lear. For Lear is not only an abused father, he is a king. This is the story of King Lear, who is both the ruler of Britain and the father of three daughters."?Mortimer Adler, introducing the play for the GBF.

Be sure to RSVP to be eligible for one of our fabulous door prizes. The third arriving member, who had RSVP'd gets the honor and the prize.

From herein all regular meetings will begin with a brief chat and introduction of new and old members. We will then start with a review of the four rules of Shared Inquiry. The leader will pose the first question and discussion will generally last for an hour and an half, with the first and greater portion of the meeting emphasizing interpretation and the second part evaluation. We'll end with post-discussion comments and critique. Since this is a social and not merely intellectual group, continuing friendly conversation beyond the formalized session is always encouraged.
