Three Bestsellers for June, July and August ...

For our June 21st Meetup, Patty's selection is "The Secret Life of Bees"by Sue Monk Kidd
Set in the American south in 1964, the year of the Civil Rights Act and intensifying racial unrest is a powerful coming of age story of the ability of love to transform our lives.

For July, April has given us a wake up call with "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Set in the smoking ashes of a postapocalyptic America, the story of a man and his son's journey toward the sea and uncertain salvation. An unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

August will be here before you know it and Wendy's bestselling choice is "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen.
An atmospheric, gritty, and compelling novel of star-crossed lovers, set in the circus world circa 1932.
When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town A veterinary student , Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to train her.
Beautifully written, "Water for for Elephants" is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. A story of love between two people overcoming incredible odds in a world where love is a luxury few can afford.

*Other points of discussion were;

We will continue to meet at Borders except for gatherings that aren't "book of the month"
We will fill the months of Sept., Oct., and Dec., months that as of now don't have a book selected.
We aren't planning on Sandi Ault visiting our Book Club at this time. If I hear from her I'll let everyone know.

Thanks to everyone for another great meeting!

See "Messages" on the sidebar for the complete book list with Sept, Oct, and Dec soon to come!

    •  Julie was a great organizer by bringing the best energy of open and structure combination. The people in the group were all wonderful and honest in thier feelings and sharing. The book sharing was a great bonus not supported in previous groups I have joined. I feel thankful that I can be part of this group. Julie is great. My first time and I even recieved a book card as a gift to buy another book! Thanks to Julie.
    •  The group members always have a lot of interesting points of view. There are so many of us now, but everyone takes turns and is very respectfull.
    •  Thoughtful discussion.
    •  I always enjoy our meeting greatly! Thanks everybody!
    •  It was so great to discuss this book. Even though we got off on several tangets, Julie was able to bring us right back to the book!
    •  The June meeting was awesome. The conversation was great as always and we continue to pull in new members. I loved this month's book and love the bookclub!
    •  The discussions were very interesting, as several people had lived in the South (where the book was set). Perhaps more time could have been spent discussing the actual book, though Julie did her best to get us back on track. .
