The format for the May meetup is slightly different to the norm. As you (may) know, our aim this month was to discuss a book that had been made into a film and our chosen book was 'The Hours' by Michael Cunningham.

What better way to compare the two than to (1) read the book between now and the May meetup, and then (2) watch the film on the actual evening of the meetup, and have a discussion afterwards.

Angus has very kindly arranged for us to rent room C221, on the second floor of the Clerici Building at the Headington Campus of Oxford Brookes University (Gipsy Lane). Here are the directions:

The Clerici Building is the building facing you when you go through the main entrance to the campus on Gipsy Lane. The stairs are right in front of the door into Clerici. You go up 2 floors and turn right into a wide corridor, and C221 is a little way down on the left. We will be hanging around on campus outside to point arrivals in the right direction.

There's likely to be space for a few cars in the campus carpark. Make for the left side of the cark park as you turn in.

The DVD screening will begin at 6.45pm sharp. The film of 'The Hours' is a little under two hours in running time, so it should finish just before 9pm. The discussion will follow.

I realize this is going to be a later evening than our typical meetup, so it may not be for everyone. Rest assured, we'll return to our traditional format of meeting in June, but I think this is a really nice way to break with tradition and do something a bit different.

It's fine to bring refreshments, so long as you're happy to take empty bottles, packets, etc, away with you.

Do let me know if you have any further queries. And do RSVP for this meetup as you would any other.

Many thanks!

NB: Looking ahead, our June book is 'Child 44' by Tom Rob Smith. June meetup to be scheduled shortly.

Talk about this Meetup

  • Posted May 5, 2009 3:18 PM
This promises to be a memorable evening, thanks Angus and Cath for organising it. I must say I was only vaguely aware of Virginia Woolf until reading this book, but am now partially addressing that by reading Mrs Dalloway before our meeting in the in hope that it will deepen my appreciation of "The Hours." Has anyone else been similarly prompted to read or reread any VW as a result of this month's assignment?

    •  It was nice to have a different meeting and seeing the film made an interesting contrast to the book which brought out good discussion points. A big thanks to Cath and Angus for organising things so well and with all the food and drink it was a nice social event, I'm sure everyone enjoyed it . Shame we didn't have a bit more time for the discussion .
    •  I'm so glad the DVD only stuck once and that Cath went to the trouble of providing food. As ever, very grateful to her.
    •  It was great to do something slightly different, and watching the film really worked, and gave more to talk about. We should do it again sometime!
    •  prefer to have had more time in discussion.
    •  Enjoyed watching the movie and then discussing movie versus book. Put a difference perspective on the book!
    •  Big thanks to Angus for organizing the venue and beverages - and to everyone who came along and made this a memorable evening. Also to Debbie for making the chocolate cakes. YUM.
    •  The best yet, thanks to Rhiannon for the idea and Cath and Angus for organising and even providing food. The film made for a long evening, but really helped me to understand the complexities of this book and Mrs Dalloway, which I am finding quite a struggle to get through.
    •  Really enjoyed this one. Nice twist with the film and the book. Great effort from Cath and Angus. Much appreciated.
    •  As I hadn't seen the film, thought it was a great idea to watch the movie then discuss the book..loved it! Big thanks to Cath and Angus for organising the venue and food!!
