Looking ahead to May, our poll winner for our 'books turned into films' discussion is Michael Cunningham's book, The Hours. May meetup to be scheduled soon.
“ I don't know if the unseasonal warmth sapped our energy but the book did not elicit opinions as strong as I would have expected (from me either). The switching of people between tables was, therefore, particularly welcome as it changed the mix of views at each table. I think we could even consider having two such switches and see how that goes. Angus ”
“ Most people were enthusiastic about the vivid storytelling in this book and we had a lively discussion. It was good too that groups were rotated so I met more people this time and also had the opportunity of talking with people I had met before.
Sometimes I find it difficult to articulate what makes a book special or what grates and I always enjoy hearing other people putting things into words: if I agree that is good and if I disagree then it is fascinating. I was really interested this week that I had found the book very moving but a section that someone else thought was the saddest hadn't touched me at all.
As usual the meeting was thought provoking. Looking foward to next time. ”
“ For me, maybe the best bookclub yet - not necessarily because of the book itself, but for the quality of the discussion. Anne's personal insight into Afghan culture and Mohammed's recollection of Palestine were the highlights for me. A great example of how a bookclub can add to one's appreciation of what on the face of it is a pacey cinematic novel written for an American audience. Look forward to seeing everyone next time! ”
