We're a book club in Philadelphia with a focus on contemporary literature. We have a lot of members, but don't worry - we wind up with a comfortable number of folks at the meetings. We meet at a bar, diner, or a coffeehouse, so no hosting duties, plenty of room, and you almost never have to buy the book.

We brought our group to Meetup.com in April 2010, but we actually began our monthly book discussions in September 2009. We have been having our meetings the first Wednesday evening of every month, 7pm at Red Hook Coffee & Tea (765 S 4th St - between Fitzwater & Catharine in Queen Village). The meetings generally go no later than 9pm. We are casual and enthusiastic; our members enjoy reading and collectively choosing and discussing books on a monthly basis. We take turns selecting the books for …

This group was started to help create a single place to find House Concerts in the Philly area. Initially I'll post concerts onto the calendar as Notes (with a link to more information about the event), and if the House Concert host desires, you'll be able to RSVP right here from Meetup. My theory is that there are lots of people on Meetup who are looking for unique experiences, and I'd love to connect you all to the House Concert experience. What is a House Concert? A house concert is an even …

This group is for those who love fantasy, supernatural and paranormal romance. Some of my favorites are Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Karen Moning, J.R. Ward. We will read and discuss a different novel. We can also discuss lore, legend and non-fiction as well. Our bookclub meetings are informal and all opinions on the books we choose are welcome. At the end of each meetup, we'll decide what to read next.

There has been a concentration of wealth in the hands of the few. The wealthy are growing more wealthy in a disproportionate way, the middle class is disappearing, and the poor grow daily in number and desperation. This concentration of wealth coincides with a parallel concentration in power that has also been steadily growing thru the years. To reverse the concentration of wealth in the hands of the few, we must reverse the concentration of power. In my book, "If Not Democracy", and on my blog, …
If you're looking to learn practical martial arts skills in a friendly, informal, and non-traditional environment, the Philly Ronin's Fight Club is for you! This group is the result of my decade-plus journey through the world of martial arts - from boxing, to Jeet Kune Do, to Muay Thai, to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, to MMA, to various hand-to-hand combat systems. It's also a product of my general dissatisfaction with the way martial arts is taught at most commercial schools: they're overpriced, thei …

Do you you have a love of maps and history? Are you interested in the environment through an historical lens? Often we are taught subjects as self-contained disciplines, but in reality there are many natural forces which effect an historical event, such as plagues, landforms, climate, wind and ocean currents. This group isn't about reciting dates or capitals--we explore people, places and events and the the way the natural world has affected history and vice versa. It's really amazing stuff!

I started this group for people who want to learn how to use various Unix-like OS's (Unix, Linux, FreeBSD, OSX) more effectively from the command line interface. Unlike a lot of other groups that mainly feature project presentations and technology overviews, my intention with this group is to go in the direction of a group-taught class, where the group will pick a book, paper or online tutorial to read over and work on some exercises together and then go on to work on some projects that we can t …
